Mike Juggins
Painter and Film-maker

Mike was born in Wiltshire, in 1966 and as a dyslexic person he struggled at school leaving with no GCSEs. After years of unemployment and dead end jobs he took up care work with his local health authority. His warm nature lent itself to supporting adults with special needs and he enjoyed many years in this rewarding work. However at the age of 29 he embarked on a BA at the University of West England in Bristol and successfully completed his Art in a Social Context degree.

Mike later set up his own community arts business and has enabled many individuals from society's margins to develop skills and confidence through art and film. Much of this work has focused on raising greater understanding and appreciation of dyslexia with an encouraging focus on ability.

Mike's achievements with dyslexia include international multi-sensory workshops, articles and films. His positive approach to his disABILITY has seen his work aired on Radio 4, published in the Times Educational Supplement and premiered at the House of Lords. Mike says:

"Painting is my high place. Spontaneity and serendipity are welcome guests. I channel gesture, colour and emotion in a free state of mind, often taking cues from the music I listen to. I truly love the visual, physical and sensual rewards that painting gives me. For me painting is all about finding the inventor within; always endeavouring to find a new way forward with the paint.
