How It Works
The programme is always adapted to suit the specific requirements of the school or college. There are four stages: pre-event registration, the 3-day event, the community challenge and the awards ceremony. This is a typical example:
1. Pre-event registration
Registration is held at the school or college. Art, music and drama students complete a registration form where they pledge to 'give back' to their local community.
Administration is co-ordinated with the school or college. This involves selecting suitable dates, scheduling the use of the performance space, and so on.
2. The Event
The 3-day event is action-packed with team games, engaging stories and role-playing. The content has been specifically designed for visual and performing artists and it is academically underpinned by research into 'how artistes learn to become entrepreneurial.' This is an overview of the programme:
Day 1 Morning
How to develop your brand identity
Participants focus on identifying their talents, their unique selling point and how their creativity can be applied to a commercial context.
Day 1 Afternoon
How to make the most of the Media
Confidence and communication skills are developed when participants learn how to promote their exhibitions and performances via print media, radio and television.
Day 2 Morning
How to develop negotiation skills
Participants learn how to put a price on their talent by developing practical budgeting and negotiation skills.
Day 2 Afternoon
Business planning
This final session looks ahead at goal setting and business planning for the community challenge.
Day 3 Morning
Rehearsals
Participants form teams which are a mix of artists and musicians. They are given a theme and are assisted to work together to generate ideas for a 15 minute stage performance.
Day 3 Afternoon
The Gig-Arts Show
Following a dress rehearsal and sound check the audience arrives. The grand finale is the show which lasts for one hour. Afterwards, all participants receive a certificate, they then start planning their community challenge.
