The Community Challenge is central to the Gig-Arts Giving experience.
It encourages participants to take responsibility and to take action.
And when young people give their time and talent to help the community
there is a knock on effect. Those who receive the kindness cannot fail
to be touched by the experience and are inspired to follow the example
of Gig-Arts' young leaders of tomorrow:
"We totally endorse this event and know that this will be successful
for the students, staff and community. The work undertaken by Gig-Arts
supports the London Borough of Merton's vision to foster the aesthetic
appreciation of our students and enhance their communication and social
skills."
Councillor Deborah Shears, Cabinet Member for Children's Services
There are many ways to 'give back' through the community challenge. For example:
Oscar's Community Photographic Project
"For my
Gig-Arts community challenge I produced a series of six photographs to
promote the sale of clothing at a Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice charity
shop. The aim was to attract a younger audience to buy charity clothes.
I really enjoyed taking the photographs that I knew would help the
charity too. It made me feel really good giving back to the community
for a good cause.
Thanks to Abbie's encouragement at Gig-Arts I found that when I went
for university interviews I was more confident and enthusiastic rather
than being so shy. I think that being part of Gig-Arts really helped me
with this.
I'm now on a BA (hons) Photography course at the London College of
Fashion and am excited about a career in this challenging business!
Thanks to Gig-Arts I've also been developing my own entrepreneurial
skills and was recently commissioned to do a photo shoot for the
internationally acclaimed rock band 'Marillion' - it was great!"

Leona's Art Lessons move Maidenhead Community
Gig-Arts participant, Leona Knight, gained a glowing report for her community challenge:
"Leona ran a series of art lessons for older members of the community
as a special art project last year and the project was most successful.
The art classes were advertised in advance as part of the project.
Mostly there were 4-6 people in the class. There was a good variety of
activities including watercolour, landscape, still life, pencil or
charcoal sketching, and acrylic painting on boxes. She was well
prepared in terms of her materials and had good ideas.
Participants really enjoyed the variety of techniques. Leona showed
great knowledge of her media. She was very helpful when students asked
questions and was able to help them improve their skills when they
asked for help. Leona has great potential.
The classes were a great success and participants have asked for the class to be restarted, a sure sign of their appreciation." Hila Bram, Director of Community Projects, Maidenhead
